Little Spoons

Today marks the final week of my Annual Holiday Sale on Etsy. Next Monday, December 15th will be the last day to take advantage of 25% off and complimentary gift wrap. For the next five days I'm going to share a new design and surprise you with special flash deals. Today's pieces are my Spoon Pendant and Spoon Earrings, new additions to my History Repeats Collection.

In the recent past, I've made abstract spoons for a few sculptural one-of-a-kind necklaces and I liked the form so much I decided to create miniature versions. These little spoons measure about 1 1/2" long and are composed of a teardrop and an angular wall to represent the handle and shallow bowl of a traditionally designed spoon. Spoons can symbolize different things and to me they reference friendship, generosity and the sharing that naturally happens between good friends. My Spoon Pendant and Spoon Earrings are on sale for $54 each.

Now, to find out about my special flash deals and final surprises this week, please visit me on Instagram. That's where you will discover what I'm up to…

In Between Worlds

Last year, before I moved to my parents' house from Asheville, I told some friends that I felt like I was "in between worlds" and this sentiment remains intact today. I find myself "in between" in my work and where I want to live; I'm split between jewelry and installation/sculpture, I'm split between the US and Iceland, and I'm split between family obligations and the studio. This divided feeling lingers at the surface and informs my work whether I'm conscious of it or not.

When I was designing new work for my History Repeats Collection, I started by playing around with existing forms and as I moved pieces in front of me, I remembered something my friend, Jen Townsend, said. It was something like "if you're stuck on a piece, cut it apart." And, that's exactly what I did. I divided my Sentiment teardrop shape in half with my saw frame and began working with the parts. I went on to design three incredibly simple pieces I'm calling "Split Sentiment," which seems wonderfully appropriate right now.

We are often split or divided in our lives in lots of different ways and these moments test us. They can also bring out the best in us. My Split Sentiment Earrings and Pendant are for these moments, both beautiful and challenging.

Please visit my Etsy shop, AmyTavernJewelry, to view these pieces and more new work. Everything is 25% off from now until September 18!

Subdued

I introduced new Regal Graffiti colors when I was still a resident at Penland and recently revisited them--lavender, light blue, army green, gray, and gold. (I especially like that gold!) The Penland Gallery requested both Regal Graffiti and History Repeats this year and that's when I realized how great the new colors look alongside the distressed brass of HR. I think some more exclusive pieces for Penland are in the works, too, so stay tuned for those! Here are images of some of the pieces I just sent:

There are more pics of pieces in these colors on Facebook.

Final Day and Rose and Sentiment

Rose and Sentiment Earrings...Sale price $90
Today is the final full day of my 96-Hour Sale and here is the fourth new "History Repeats" piece, Rose and Sentiment Earrings. Lovely and delicate with a modern, deconstructed edge...regular price $120, sale price $90.

The sale has been great so far and I'm looking forward to filling all the orders I've collected since Friday. I have to say, it is so fun to sell my work for obvious reasons, but what I really love is the connection I make with my customers. Most people leave me comments when they order and what they share with me is always fantastic: a brief story telling why they chose the piece they purchased, comments on how they relate to my work, or the identity of the person who will get the piece as a gift. The purchase itself means so much to me but those stories, they bring it home. So thanks to all of you for that! If you haven't had a chance to stop by the shop yet, I do hope you will visit in the next 24 hours while the sale is still on. There are lots of pieces under $50...perfect treats for yourself or someone you love. I created a new shop section, "Under 50 Dollars," just for these pieces.

Badges...Sale $36 each

Small Arc Pendant...Sale $40.50

Sentiment Pendant...Sale $42

History Repeats

My Anchor

Since the day after Thanksgiving and the start of my Etsy Holiday Sale, I've been introducing new pieces focusing on the teardrop and bow and brass. Then more recently, I added the rose and anchor. I realized today what has developed is a lovely collection using my current favorite shapes and symbols and fueled by my interests in memory, sentiment, historical jewelry, traditional tattoos, and signs of age. As I drove in my car yesterday, I finally came up with a title, too, "History Repeats." This seems appropriate because the work is about history/memory as I revisit ideas and interests from my recent past.

Rose Bouquet

When I launched my sale a few weeks ago I had lots of drawings and ideas for this new collection. Some of these made it into actual pieces while others never made it past the paper maquettes. At one point I wasn't even into it anymore, but now I really like what's happening. There are 16 pieces so far...

Since reentering the "real world" post-Penland and Belgium, I have returned my focus to production jewelry and will continue to do so in the coming months as get my feet back on the ground and before I return to Europe in the spring. I am happy for the break from one-of-a-kind and look forward to making more pieces like the ones I've been introducing lately--something is going on here and I'm curious to see what  happens next. I hope you like them, too.

Seven...

I'll be taking a break from the studio starting today to spend some long-overdue time with my family in Upstate NY. I'll be back in early January working away in my studio at 7 Ton Letterpress Collective in Asheville alongside three of the sweetest letterpress printmakers I know. Until then thanks for making my Etsy Holiday Sale a huge success and for your constant support and kind words. You are good to me.
