Iceland inspires me daily and I have channeled my memories of color in the landscape into a new Regal Graffiti palette. Now, in addition to my Bright and Subdued palettes, I am excited to share my Iceland Palette, based on observations of orangey-yellow, lichen-covered rocks, chartreuse fields of moss, snowy-white vistas, sprawling, black sand beaches, etherial blue glaciers and vast gray skies. Here are the pictures I used when finding the perfect Krylon cans:

Pausing for a Moment

Paused Sentiment and Remembering Earrings,  sale price $76.50

My Etsy sale began yesterday and I started introducing new work alongside an updated shop. In the last few days I have reworked all the descriptions of my 90 plus items and updated my policies and info. I was also making new pieces to list. I must admit, I fell behind in my preparations and had to put in some very long days and still wasn't ready yesterday morning. It's been a juggling act, but now I feel a little bit relaxed. I hadn't titled my new pieces for today until the moment I listed them and the word I chose seems appropriate. This mini-series in my History Repeats Collection includes two earring styles and matching pendants that begin with the word "paused." They combine movement with stationary elements while echoing my interest in memory and sentiment. I took a deep breath this morning when I woke up at 6am and I paused for a moment before heading to the studio for the day.

Directions for Installing an Exhibition

Step 8: Step back & look & be happy & go home. Very pleased w/ today, work looks beautiful here.

I drove to Cherry Branch Gallery in Cherry Valley, NY to install my exhibition, "I Live Here Now," early this morning. Then over the course of the day, I systematically installed the work, focusing on one thing at a time which helped me  keep a clear mind and feel relaxed. I'm a little under the weather so I've taken a slow pace all day with little breaks in between each task. The space looks great and I'm very pleased. I was on Twitter throughout the process and the pictures here include captions from Tweets.

The show opens tomorrow, September 6, from 5-7 at the Cherry Branch Gallery.

Arrived at the gallery. Lots to do, but i love installing… show opens tomorrow by the way!

Step 1: unpack the work

Step 2: Get brain food. Coffee, grilled muffin. 

Along the way, I saw my posters in many of the shops.

Step 3: Compose layout. I think I have enough pedestals, there's plenty of wall space. Will be open to adjustments...

 Step 4: Display the work. Everything has a place/enough room & layout feels good

Step 5: Drill holes & hang things. Walls are often tougher than they seem, I need a sharper drill bit.

Step 6: Remove the work & paint the pedestals. Then take a break as the paint dries.

Step 7: Iron my Island and frame it again

Projections

I've been collecting videos for awhile now, recording two-minutes of visuals, light and movement using my point-and-shoot digital camera. Over the past few months I've been thinking about projecting these videos onto things like objects, trees, buildings and water, wondering what would happen and considering the video and the elements of the video as materials. I planned to create an installation while at Penland and thought I would build a space within an existing space. However, I couldn't stop thinking about projection and realized I had to take this opportunity to work with my videos and "sketch" in real time, in real scale and in public. I worked with my friend and fellow artist, Mark Boyd, and together we set up a projector at an angle and several feet above the edge of a pond. The video projected on the surface of the water and up into the trees, the trees reflected onto the water, and the rippling of the water itself reflected onto the trees. In addition, leaves and pine needles floating on the surface of the water added unusual details. Neither of us knew any of this would happen and were beyond excited to discover all the effects that occurred simultaneously. We also played Sigur Rós on a sound system and the music layered beautifully with the ambient noises of insects and tree frogs. It was an exciting hour and now I have even more information to work with. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos because it was too dark to capture everything but I will remedy this the next time...

A Complete Thought

My Penland class "A Complete Thought" was a fantastic experience. My students worked hard and made some very thoughtful work, considering their pieces from all sides and paying close attention to the details. It really felt like everyone challenged themselves technically and aesthetically and I so appreciate that. I enjoyed working with them and wish we had another week together. Session 7 is an intense one with jammed-packed days of demos, discussion and work time. Plus, there are evening events and other activities around campus. There is never enough time so it seems, but I'm pleased with the work of my group of 12 and we had a lot of fun. Here are a few of the finished pieces...
