Blog Tour

Solitary by Jane Wells Harrison

I was recently tagged in a blog tour by Jane Wells Harrison, a friend and colleague I know from North Carolina. Jane works with mixed-media and creates all sorts of wonderful 2D works, books, jewelry and more. I always enjoy talking with Jane and admire her use and manipulation of a variety of media. You can find her blog here and her blog tour post here.

Now it's my turn to tag the blogs I like…I enjoy reading these blogs for their excellent content and because I admire the work of each artist. I also relate to their methods and sensibilities and like being able to keep up with them from afar; all three bloggers are also friends who I don't get to see that much.

Above and Below by Marianne Dages

Marianne Dages is a printmaker and book artist and she lives in Philadelphia. Her blog includes pictures of finished work, process shots, and source images. She keeps her text brief but descriptive, and often posts beautiful poetry to accompany her images. Marianne is interested in arrangements like I am, and also spent time in Iceland at a residency, both of which draw me to her work specifically. You can find her blog here.

Unsent Letters, No. 2 by Catherine Chandler

Catherine Chandler is a metalsmith living in Portland, OR and she just graduated from Oregon College of Art and Craft. I followed her thesis progress via her blog and loved watching it develop over time. Her deeply personal work is about communication and Catherine does an wonderful job letting her readers in on her thoughts and emotions. You can find her blog here.

Brooch by Arthur Hash

Arthur Hash is a metalsmith and also uses a variety of digital fabrication techniques form waterjet cutting to CNC routing. Arthur posts lots of process images and uses them to detail how he makes his work. I really like it when artists share their process freely, and Arthur is definitely one of these people. His work is innovative and beautifully made and he shows us all the ins and outs through pictures. You can find his blog, The Art Escape Plan, here.

virtual visiting artist, so high-tech

today i did a video chat lecture/presentation with arthur hash and his production jewelry students at SUNY New Paltz in new paltz, ny. first i did a power point about my current jewelry and then answered a set of questions about my work, business practices, experiences, and plans. after that we did a little one on one question and answer session and finished with a tour of my studio. it was fun and so interesting...i've never done anything like it before! well, the video chat thingy that is...ah, technology.

a shed, a basement, and a closet

elfin studio

my recent shop-closure/end-of-my-collections has got me thinking about the past. the other day i was fondly remembering my very first studio which lead me to the others. since i've moved a lot i've had the pleasure of occupying many different ones. my first studio after graduating UW was in my backyard, a tiny shed that i renovated with the help of my dad. it was 6' x 7' and had a sweet dutch door. i felt like an elf in there. later i moved into a deluxe basement in portland, OR that was at least 5 times as big. it had wall-to-wall carpeting. (unfortunately, i cannot find any photos!) then i revisited my small studio roots back in seattle and made a utility closet my workspace. next i did something really different and moved into a big shared studio across the country in north carolina with joanna gollberg, geoff giles, and molly dingledine. in between all those were a few very temporary spots - a 4 month residency at vain, a dark and damp basement, my benches at penland during classes, a dining room - and now i'm here in the biggest, most beautiful space i've ever been in and quite possibly might ever be in. so glad i get two more years here.

p.s. arthur hash has been posting pics of different artist spaces on his blog, the art escape plan. i love seeing how and where others work.

news and updates

i recently had my klimt02 page updated with some new images and information. i changed my portrait, too. the last one was embarrassingly large. i think the new one is much better. you can view the page here. i am also a new jewelry artist on object fetish, an online jewelry gallery. when i was invited to be on the site i spent some time getting to know the other artists and site features. i was happy to find lots familiar names and several friends including sarah loertscher, aran galligan, geoff giles, and arthur hash. i know i will spend more time there over the next couple if weeks getting to know the artists that are new to me. (i see a great resource for guest star friday...) you can view that page here.

i also added some new studio shots to my flickr page. these pictures were taken when i first started painting the space. this week i will be painting the windows and the entryway door. i will be adding more pictures soon once the project is complete.

finally, i started adding model pictures to my website shop. you'll find them in the preface collection. more coming...
