First Samples via Heat Exchange

I love making samples. Love. This is something I have discovered since becoming a resident artist at Penland. I have spent a lot of my time over the past three years exploring process, technique, and materials and made many, many samples. I realized the other day as I worked on my enameling what a luxury it is to be able to have the time to make samples. It really is. There are so many things we artists have to do in a day that it is challenging to carve out the time to explore. I am enjoying learning a new material and process and like making sample after sample just to see what happens if…I layer, over-fire, sand blast, stone, scratch, draw, drizzle water on a dried enamel surface, fire before the surface is completely dry. The aim is to learn and get comfortable through exploration and, ultimately, to find that distressed, messed-up, aged-looking, imperfect surface that mimics that kinds of things I am inspired by.

My favorite discoveries so far include incising lines on the surface of the metal as well as on the surface of the fired enamel using my flex shaft and a cutting or separating disc, over-firing, and dripped water on the surface of dried enamel. I am really enjoying this time. Really and truly. Now I am beginning to consider the sample as more than a sample as many of them are turning out rather nicely. I hate to discard them for more “serious” pieces and so I’m thinking these samples might turn into the finished pieces. More on that later…

Guest Star #88....Jim Bove

My Guest Star for today is Jim Bove. I first saw Jim's work in Exhibition in Print and was reminded of it at the ECU symposium over the weekend. I am drawn to Jim's soft, simple shapes and his beyond minimal drawing and surface design. The pieces are fabricated in copper and painted with car paint. Some drawings are s ilverpoint or goldpoint, a process in which marks are made with silver or gold. I find this work to be sensitive and absolutely lovely.

My Line Drawing Necklace No. 8 will be part of a one-night only exhibition at The Fuller Projects in Bloomington, IN tonight. This invitational show, titled "Crush," includes the work of Renee Zettle-Sterling, Jim Bove, Lindsay Fisher, Laura Wood, Gary Schott, Soyeon Kim, Marissa Saneholtz, Jonas Mace, Jennifer Wells, Ian Henderson, Raissa Bump, and myself. It was organized by University of Indiana Bloomington grad students Galatea Kontos and Sara Brown.

Sara and Galatea invited two metalsmiths they admire to be in the show and then we were asked to invite two more metalsmiths we admire. I was invited by Galatea and I asked Ian Henderson and Raissa Bump to join me. Ian's incredible box pictured at the top and Raissa's lovely brooch below will be on view. I am so impressed with the group of artists--all amazing talents and so varied. I am sure it will be a beautiful and interesting exhibition.

Thinking Points via Heat-Exchange

Here's a post I wrote for the Heat-Exchange blog...I’ve been collecting visual information since I last posted here. Lately, I find myself drawn to the winter landscape of my home in North Carolina–it’s quiet and stark, everything is “dead,” for lack of a better word…but everything is so beautiful! The dim and golden light, the gorgeous palate of brown, white, and gray, the movement of trees and grasses in the wind…

I drove to New York to visit friends and family for Christmas. It’s a long drive, providing 14 hours of thinking time. I noticed these same things as I drove through Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and then New York and couldn’t help but think about them. This is when I knew they were going to influence my enameling and be the starting point for my new work. I took lots of new pictures and sorted through files of images from the past on my computer, gathering together my favorites for this specific project. I have posted several images here and started a set on Flickr for all of them to be together and for you see, if you like. I have also posted some images of things I made during a wonderful enameling class with Helen Carnac. I see a similar thought pattern in these pieces, too.

Now THAT was Good! (The 2012 Edition.)

I attended "Material Topics: Shifting Traditions" at East Carolina University over the weekend and once again this year the ECU metals students put on one amazing symposium! I taught two classes on Sunday, beginning each with a talk about my work and process and then set my students to task making a piece of jewelry in one hour using things like paper, leather, staples, and tape. When the time was up, we talked about the process and what they learned. Both classes were packed--the largest groups I have taught so far, maybe 30 or so each! I was incredibly pleased with the work that was made and very happy with the comments and questions discussed during the talk--insightful, thoughtful, and inspiring. I was also psyched that many of my colleagues were in attendance. That means a lot to me! Thanks to everyone who participated in my classes and for working so hard! It really was a pleasure to lead you all in the workshop and share my experience with you.

I attended a fantastic mechanisms workshop with Angela Bubash. Angela demonstrated a clever pin mechanism and a simple prong setting using jump rings. Her constant attention to detail and craftsmanship was wonderful to observe in person. Her knowledge is extensive.

I also listened to several lectures including the keynote by Renee Zettle-Sterling. Renee articulated many interesting points about objects, non-verbal communication, and memory.

And finally, I got to have some good talks with ECU grad students, Kat Cole, Rachel Qualliotine, and Leia Zumbro. Kat is currently on thesis and has asked me to advise her along the way. Rachel, a brand new grad, is trying all sorts of things out--enameling, felting, found objects--and wanted to revisit some of the ideas we discussed when we talked about her work over the summer here at Penland. Leia and I also had a lovely visit, talking about her work and process. It's moments like these that make what I do so worthwhile.

Brooch No. 16 from "Collected Memories: 1974-Present"

Tomorrow I am off to Greenville, NC to attend and teach at "Material Topics: Shifting Traditions," the third annual metals symposium at East Carolina University. This year's symposium includes lectures, workshops, panel discussions, break-out sessions, professional development seminars, and exhibitions. I will be teaching a workshop called "Exploring Process, Building Form" twice on Sunday, January 15. The first workshop takes place from 10-12:30 and the second happens from 1:30-4. I am looking forward to leading my process class again--it will be similar to those I taught at City College in San Francisco in November and also the Kenan Institute last year. Students in this weekend's class will make a piece of jewelry in one hour using common and found materials. Then we will have a discussion about the finished pieces. I have also prepared a 15-minute lecture on my process--what it is, how I came to discover it, and how I have applied my findings to my most recent body of work, "Collected Memories."

Hot Under the Collar, the exhibition I am co-jurying with Bob Ebdendorf at this year's SNAG conference, now has insurance AND the deadline for entries has been extended to February 1! From comments on the classic strand of pearls to contemporary takes on armor, this juried exhibition seeks to showcase how metalsmiths today interpret this incredibly versatile object.

It's Still Love, Despite the Heartbreak

Today is my three-year residency anniversary! I moved here on January 4, 2009 and the above image shows what I saw as I moved boxes into my studio. The panorama below is how it looks like now. I absolutely love this space!

Back in January, 2009 I settled into a corner at first, basically the size I was comfortable with. A few months later I repaired walls, painted, added more furniture, hung artwork, and spread out. I believe the size of this studio affected my work in a positive way: its vastness allowed my work to literally grow. Over the last three years I have kept the room about the same, but changed the arrangement and displays every so often. The latest version is by far my favorite.

At this point, I only have two months left as a resident. It's hard for me to believe my time here in this capacity is coming to a close. It has flown by and has been truly remarkable. I knew it would be fantastic, but I had no idea how it would really look or what would happen. I had my list of plans and goals, of course, but I left room for the unexpected...these three years far exceeded my vision. I feel excited and humbled, but also sad (and often very, very sad). This is my home and the one place I have felt more like myself than any other place I have lived. I know the opportunity I was given is precious--intense time to explore one's work and focus on making things does not happen like this in the "real world." I have also met some amazing people and had some incredible conversations and experiences with them...I have wonderful friends and colleagues.

To celebrate my three years, I asked my friend Dana Moore, to take pictures of my studio. I have added them to a flickr set that I hope you will view. She did a beautiful job capturing the space and all it's lovely natural light and character. (Thank you, Dana!)

Teaching Week Part 4: Art Jewellery @ The Winter School

The most exciting teaching opportunity coming my way is to travel to Ballarat, Victoria in Australia next July. The week-long class is called "The Whole Jewel" and is part of Art Jewellery @ The Winter School, a program of Fibre Arts Australia. It runs from June 30-July 5, 2012. I plan to fly to Melbourne a few days early to adjust to the time change and to explore. Then I will head to Ballarat which is about 1.5 hours away. After the class I would like to stay in Australia to travel more for about three weeks.

" In this class students will be challenged to think beyond traditional jewelry design to create work that is both sculptural and wearable. Through demonstrations, discussions, and plenty of one-on-one time, students will create one-of-a-kind jewelry that is beautifully made and thoughtfully designed. We will focus on the details, bold or subtle, that make jewelry stronger and more interesting, as well as unique and personal. Technical demonstrations will include surface design, cold connections, bezel and tab setting, pin mechanisms, and much more."

The other instructors from the U.S. include Arthur Hash, Marjorie Simon, Hilary Pfeifer, and Sarah Doremus. The instructors from Australia include Anna Davern, Katherine Bowman, Caz Guiney, and Ali Limb. It's going to one incredible week and I am beyond excited!

Teaching Week Part 3: Pocosin Arts Cabin Fever Reliever

In February I will teach a chain making class called "Innovating the Chain" at Pocosin Arts Cabin Fever Reliever, a four day, three night creative arts retreat.

"In this class students will be challenged to think beyond the traditional chain while learning chain making techniques and design using both wire and sheet metal. Students will examine and manipulate line, shape, repetition, pattern, and negative space to innovate and personalize their chains. Daily demonstrations and discussions will be complemented with projects and lots of one-on-one time."

I've been wanting to teach a chain making class so I am excited for this opportunity. I will be joined by Tara Locklear, a BFA metals student at East Carolina University, as my assistant.

This year's symposium, "Merging Methods," begins Friday evening, January 13 at 6pm with an exhibition opening and reception. Teaching Week, Part 1: Spring Concentration

I will be teaching at Penland this Spring for eight weeks! My concentration class is titled "Beginning Jewelry: Technique, Process, Design." Here's the class description from the catalog:

"This class will start with basic metalsmithing, including sawing, filing, and soldering. We will then go further with scoring and folding, mechanisms, bezel setting, and many other techniques in between. With a focus on craftsmanship and design, students will learn to make jewelry and explore the artistic process. Class time will be complemented by sketchbook assignments and studio visits with area jewelers."

At this point I believe the class is full, an exciting prospect for me. I'm looking forward to teaching for eight weeks because it's a chance to really get into things. I'm planning to focus time on each basic form of jewelry (rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches), while students explore their interests/inspirations and creative habits. Students will be encouraged to work in their sketchbooks, I'll give slide talks on contemporary and historical jewelry, and we'll talk about setting up a basic studio.

I'm also very happy that I get to see the Lady Slipper (above) one more time before I leave...

Guest Star #87...Namu Cho: SNAG Week Part 5

To find today's Guest Star I revisited my copy of Exhibition in Print: Fresh. I'm interested in so many of the artists featured inside and it's hard to choose just one to write about. But, after visiting everyone's website and lots of thought, I finally landed on Namu Cho. I chose him because I wanted to look closer at someone working with traditional techniques and using primarily metal. As much as I'm drawn to alternative materials and processes, it's refreshing to find someone who focuses on metal. Namu's work is composed of high-karat gold, damascene, and damascus steel. (One of the great things about his website is that he includes definitions of these materials as well as the techniques he uses.) I like his abstract compositions and how he pairs geometric form with organic line. The intricacy of the technique is also fascinating.

Heat Exchange: SNAG Week Part 4

I was recently invited to participate in Heat Exchange, an exhibition of enameled works curated by Elizabeth Turrell, Melissa Cameron, and Beate Gegenwart. The exhibition will open in May and will be on view during the SNAG conference. Here's what the Exchange is all about:

"Heat, in physics, is defined as an exchange of energy. In thermodynamics, a heat exchanger is a system built to effect efficient heat transfer. In most heat exchange systems the exchange is mediated so that the hot and cold media do not come into contact. Typically it is only their energy that is exchanged. This exhibition seeks to replicate this exchange. The participating artists, located in North America, Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom will exchange ideas and inspirations without actually coming into contact with one another. The main interface for their exchange is this blog."

Although not an enamelist per se, I have done some enameling and have wanted to focus more attention on it. Between spray paint and my solo show, however, I have not had a chance to do so, until now. This show is a fantastic opportunity for me to move forward with enameling and to participate with a such fascinating group of artists. I like the idea of interacting via the internet and look forward to the give-and-take that situation will afford all of us.

During the summer I made an enameled book while Elizabeth was teaching a class here at Penland. Something went "wrong" during a firing of one of my steel pages, but Elizabeth suggested I look at it in another way. This "mistake" will be my starting point as I begin work for this exhibition. I am also happy to report this little book will head to London for an exhibition of enameled books in September, 2012 at Studio Fusion Gallery.

I will jury an exhibition with Bob Ebendorf for the 2012 SNAG conference in Phoenix, AZ. The show, titled "Hot Under the Collar," will feature contemporary necklaces and was created by Liz Steiner, a recent MFA grad from East Carolina University. I am thrilled to be a part of this exhibition! Jurying has been in the back of my mind for some time now and I am excited that my first experience will be working with Bob. I think we will complement each other during the process and I look forward to working with him and Liz in the coming months. I am also excited to be involved with my community in this way. It is a opportunity to participate, to give back, and to promote the field and the work of my peers. There is an issue regarding the lack of insurance at the venue and steps are being taken to remedy the situation. Despite the controversy, I believe this troubling problem has come to the forefront for a reason and I truly hope that only good things will result in the end. Guest Star #86...Niki Ulehla

While in San Francisco I took a drive to Healdsburg to visit Gallery Lulo. At that time, Niki Ulehla had a solo show on view with jewelry, paintings, and sculpture based on her dreams. Niki combines precious and found materials in unusual ways and creates jewelry that is curious and imaginative, disjointed and abstract. I really like this quote from the Gallery Lulo website: "Through these divergent techniques where play and exploration are among the most fundamental concerns, I work to create unique pieces that are simple and refined, albeit a little bit crazy."

I Left My Jewelry in San Francisco: Part 8

One of my souvenirs from my trip was this wooden necklace by Brooklyn-based, Fort Standard. I was immediately drawn to it and snatched it up as soon as I saw it. I got it at General Store just before eating one of the best and most-fun meals ever at Outerlands.

I also want to mention two online articles about me and my work that were posted while I was in SF: One is on Honey Kennedy, a wonderful design blog. The interview is by my super-fantastic web designer, Kandace Brigleb of Needmore Designs. Kandace asked me a series of questions about my solo show work and my inspirations, among other things. The other post, a review-of-sorts of "This is How I Remember It," was written by Carmela DiLeva of the Secret Life of Jewelry. The post is quite lovely and it made me a bit misty as I read it.

I Left My Jewelry in San Francisco: Part 7

My show closes in just two days. Two. Crazy! All that work, all that time. Nearly a year in the making, it was an absolutely incredible experience and totally worth it--every little bit of stress, uneasiness and insecurity, all the excitement and triumphant moments. I have added a series of process images to Flickr so you can see how I made most of work. I haven't shown these images (except Cleopatra) until now because I decided to keep the work hidden while I was making it. In hindsight, I know this was a good choice because making this work was involved and challenging in a way that I had never experienced before. I often had no idea what to say and had to internalize my thoughts and feelings. However, keeping it hidden also made it feel unreal, almost like it didn't exist, and this made me feel unsure about the work. I realize now I was at once intimately involved and aware of each piece, yet I was also disconnected. Then, when I saw it all together during the installation, it felt real to me and I was finally able to feel excited.

When I returned to Penland I put together a show of process works, titled "With My Heart on My Sleeve." You can also see images from that event on Flickr. Finally, I added a series of images to Facebook that show highlights from the show and my trip to San Francisco.

I Left My Jewelry in San Francisco: Part 5

My trip was incredibly inspiring! It was refreshing and energizing and really made me feel excited to get back to my studio. I saw so many cool things, like these:

A metal "patch" covering a hole in the walkway at Muir Woods. These were everywhere! I spent more time looking down at the walkway then up at the redwoods.

One of the best things I got to do while in San Francisco was visit the SFMOMA to see Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective. I loved it! The show includes giant drawings and a few sculptures, along with open sketchbooks, smaller drawings, and other examples of process. The SFMOMA site describes it well:

"The exhibition traces Serra's evolving ideas and methods since the 1970s, when he began making wall-size abstractions that radically altered the relationship between drawing and architectural space. Serra uses black paintstick to build stark, densely layered forms that manipulate the viewer's sense of mass and gravity, making for an experience that is as visceral as it is visual"

"Drawings after Circuit"

Minimal, monumental, quiet, captured moments and gestures, visual movement in otherwise static objects, evidence of process...all things I am fascinated by in art and craft. One of the things I liked most was reading about his process--he often wanted to see what would happen if he used his materials in a specific way and he explains how he created the pieces in order to explore and learn. He even talks about pieces being "exercises," something I relate to because creating exercises for myself is part of my process. Before seeing this exhibition I was familiar with Serra's sculptures, but not his 2D work. I really had no idea and walked away feeling inspired and excited. Don't be surprised if I begin a Serra-influenced series in textural black spray paint.

I Left My Jewelry in San Francisco: Part 3

On November 3 I taught two back-to-back 3-dimensional drawing with materials workshops at City College. I began each class with a lecture about my work followed by a short question and answer session. Then I set the students to work. They had to complete a piece of jewelry in one hour using common and found materials they had brought from home. I asked them to try different things, to work gesturally, to be mindful of the time, and to have fun. After the hour we talked about the pieces--what students were thinking about as they worked, what their intention was, why they chose the materials they did, how the process made them feel, etc. Students moved quickly and seriously during work time (it was very quiet) and had fantastic things to say during the critiques. I was delighted with the results and how articulate everyone was.

I Left My Jewelry in San Francisco: Part 2

I drove to Healdsburg, CA with Raissa Bump to visit Gallery Lulo and have lunch with owners Karen Gilbert and Anne-Kathrine Schjerbeck. Lulo has represented my work for the last two years so I was excited to see the space and spend time with Karen and Katrina.The gallery is lovely--white walls, simple and elegant design, minimal jewelry displays. Currently on view is an exhibition of jewelry and paintings based on dreams by Niki Ulehla. (The collection is very interesting and I will talk about it a different post very soon.) I left the gallery with a pair of glass and metal earrings by Karen Gilbert.

At lunch at Bistro Ralph, we talked about having a two-person show for Raissa and myself sometime in 2013. I'm really excited about this possibility! I've thought about doing something like this with Raissa since we met in 2007. After lunch, we drove through the grapevine-lined countryside and then down Highway 1. We stopped in Point Reyes for some thrifting and a beer. It felt like we were on a road trip.

For the Third Time, I Left My Jewelry in San Francisco: Part 1

Today begins a series of posts about my recent trip to San Francisco and, of course, my solo show. I will begin with the opening reception...It was absolutely wonderful and even more fantastic than I had imagined! Lots of people were there including my family, close friends, colleagues, students, and many people I didn't know. The work looked beautiful and I got some great feedback from attendees. I was overwhelmed and did not fully relax until the last 20 or 30 minutes. Afterward a small group of a few friends, my family, and Mike and Elizabeth from the gallery went to dinner. Then I celebrated some more with my friends and ended the evening in a diner near my hotel with a stack of pancakes. The entire evening was very special. It felt amazing.

A Little Bit More

While I was installing my work last week at Velvet da Vinci, I told Mike and Emma about different pieces--how I made them, what ideas were behind them, who they are about. Mike asked me to choose a few pieces and write short statements about each, thinking viewers will be interested in the stories, too. I choose five pieces from both series and these statements will be posted near the pieces for everyone to read. Here are two examples:

Bow Sweater Holder (pictured above)

This piece represents a gold-tone sweater holder with two bows and a short chain. I chose to exaggerate the form and the faded, worn appearance of the original by using multiple bows and chains and by intentionally scratching away the vermeil.

Brooch No. 8

In 2000 I began working towards my BFA in metalsmithing at the University of Washington. A dear friend gave me a cast lace necklace she made in a class we took together that year. In 2004 she passed away and I feel very fortunate to have such a lovely reminder of her and the time we spent together. The paper doily in this piece represents that necklace and my friend, as well as our inevitable loss of innocence.

Line Drawing Diversion

Two of the pieces currently on view in the Aaron Faber exhibition "In Line/In Metal" include Line Drawing No. 8 and Cluster Necklace No. 2. Once again my photographer, Hank Drew, did an amazing job with my images--I love how the lighting and shadow in both detail shots effectively extends the drawings into space.

Now That's a Big Ad

Velvet da Vinci has published an inner-cover full-page ad for my show in the latest issue of Metalsmith. Again, another surreal moment in this whole process and another piece of concrete evidence that this show is happening. The ad is beautiful.

I was also surprised and excited to discover my Line Drawing Brooch in an ad for an exhibition I'm in at Aaron Faber Gallery called "In Line/In Metal." The show will be exhibited at SOFA Chicago this weekend and includes a fantastic group of artists who all feature line in their work.

The Installation

Yesterday morning I went to Velvet da Vinci to install my exhibition. I took the above photo moments before I walked in the front door. Then I spent several hours displaying the work with the help of Mike and Emma. It was a fun day and a wonderful experience. It made the show finally feel real instead of just an abstract concept in my mind. The work looks beautiful in the space. "Collected Memories: 1974-Present" hangs on a wall, while "Fabricated Memory: Jewelry Box, 1980" is arranged in a series of vitrines. You can view most of the work on the Velvet website now and next week I will post all 58 pieces on my website, Flickr, and Facebook.

Somewhere over the Midwest

I have a fascination with aerial views and got lucky with clear skies when I flew to Seattle in early October. (Yesterday's flight to San Francisco was also clear and I saw so many incredible things, but my camera is not working.) I took lots of pictures during that Charlotte to Seattle flight and got a great idea for a new series of brooches which combines my embroideries and privacy envelopes/graph paper. When I look at these landscape images I see the gridded patterns in privacy envelopes and graph paper and shapes reminiscent of my embroideries. I like the mix of opposites here and feel these scenes are the perfect inspiration for new work. You can see the series-in-progress on Flickr.

I also created a new set on Flickr with aerial views and hope to add even more when I return to North Carolina in 10 days.

61 Hours in Seattle

About two weeks ago I flew to Seattle to work with my photographer, Hank Drew, as he took pictures of my solo show jewelry. The shoot took two days and in the evenings I spent time with some dear friends. I also ate at some of my favorite restaurants (Thaiku, Hi-Spot) and got a new tattoo. It was truly a whirlwind adventure!

I am especially happy that I was able to work with Hank. The shoot was a fascinating process to be a part of. Each image has to be just so: the lighting, the position or styling of the work. Plus, there are props to hold things in place and other tricks to make each piece look its absolute best. As soon as the shoot was over I headed to Fedex and shipped a giant box to the gallery. I was on my way to the airport just a few hours later.

Show Postcard, Reality Check

I got a stack of postcards for the show yesterday and they definitely make it all feel more real. I've spent so much time thinking about the work that I haven't actually thought about the show as a reality. It's hard to describe...I think as the opening gets closer (November 4) and more show-related things happen (like flying to San Francisco tomorrow and installing the show a few days after that) it will all settle in and become concrete.

Open House...Now with Privacy Envelopes

My last open house as a resident at Penland was this past Friday. I spent part of the day rearranging and curating my collections as a way to both honor my studio and process the many thoughts in my mind about leaving. I also hung part of my collection of privacy envelopes on a wall. (I've been collecting them for about two years.) I have a new series in the works that will incorporate embroidery and privacy envelopes with metal. These works-in-progress are hanging next to the envelope collection.

I enjoyed spending time with my objects in this manner and even added some of my work among souvenirs from trips, family heirlooms, and found objects. Arranging is a big part of my process and always inspiring for me to do. When I was done I sat on my sofa and relished my space.

Pins for the Core Fellows 2011

For the third year in a row, I made pins for Penland's core fellows for their annual exhibition. This year I quizzed them about their favorite colors, patterns/textures, and numbers. Then I used this information in whole or in part to create personalized shadowbox brooches filled with things they like and that remind me of them. Each piece also features a teardrop to symbolize sentiment and how important they are to me.

I worked on the pieces all week and assembled them on Friday. Around 2pm I only had four done, and with five left, I was terribly worried that I would not finish. In fact I was sick to my stomach! Somehow I did, though, and was able to present them to the group at their celebration dinner at 6pm.

Like Home No. 1 and No. 2

A new resident artist show, "The Barns 2011," opens at the Penland Gallery this Friday. I installed my Silhouettes on one of the walls last week and it's wonderful to see them in an offical gallery setting versus in my studio. They are accompanied by two new necklaces and a brooch. The silhouettes for the necklaces are among those in the installation so people can see the connection between my process and my finished pieces. I also turned a small silhouette into a wearable brooch by making a prong setting for it. This is an idea I have been considering for a long time and there will be more in the future.

Rapheal Prize Finalist

I am one of 33 finalists for the Elizabeth R. Rapheal Founder's Prize, a $5000 award for excellence in contemporary craft. The 2012 exhibition, catalog, and award are for small metals and includes an incredible group of metalsmiths. You can read the press release and see the list of finalists here.

The exhibition "Transformation 8: Works in Contemporary Small Metals" opens on February 3 and runs through June 30, 2012. The prize winner will be announced at the opening on February 3.

Auction 2011 in Two Parts

During my hiatus the annual Penland Benefit Auction happened on August 12 and 13. This year my Bow and Tassel Pendant Brooch was featured on the invitation alongside work by Cristina Cordova and Anne Lemanski, both former resident artists.

For the resident artist event "Coffee at the Barns" on Saturday I focused on making chains and earrings, revisiting my Line Drawings/Borderlines series.

The last day of my Arrowmont class was Friday. We began by talking about simple studio set-ups and essential tools. Then everyone had a chance to work all day until studio clean-up at 4. Things were bustling in there right up to the last minute. After clean-up we shared some wine and our work. Later after dinner there was an all-school show and tell. I said goodbye to my class then and drove back to Penland. I had a lovely time during the week and hope to teach there again. Here are a few examples of some of the things my students made:

Arrowmont Part 4

Thursday was gold day in the studio--Keum boo and leafing. I love doing both demonstrations. This time I was really interested in the leaf packaging with its handmade bind and stamped labels. I won't demo anything new tomorrow, only review as needed. I know studio time is precious and I want my students to be able to work all day before studio clean-up at 4.

We also got to view the upcoming enamalist society exhibition that opens here on September 9. The work is not on display yet so it was a true sneak peak and such a treat. I especially liked the work of Alicia Boswell.

Arrowmont Part 3

Yesterday was a very full day for "It's the Little Things." I started by demonstrating how to make simple earwires, headpins, and clasps followed by drawing down wire, twisting wire, making wire rick-rack, and making jumps rings. I am so impressed with how my students can just roll with the amount of information I am firing at them. They seem so excited! Individually they are all focused on projects of their own in addition to trying everything at least once.

Later in the afternoon we walked to the artists-in-residence studios for their open house. As usual I loved seeing how other artists work. The current residents include Phil Haralam, Lisa Johnson, Chandra DeBuse, and Dustin Farnsworth.

Then after dinner a few students piled into my car and we drove through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I worked alongside my students afterward, making paper models for pieces for the upcoming Penland Resident Artist show.

Arrowmont Part 2

Yesterday I did a variety of demonstrations for my students starting with simple surface textures using files, sandpapers, and other abrasives. In the afternoon I covered roll printing and also gave a multi-part demo on sawing/filing/sanding/piercing/dapping for my beginners. Today we started the morning with hammer textures and chasing followed by patination and rivets in the afternoon. But before I did those demos, I went on a fantastic tram ride with several students and artist-in-residence, Dustin Farnsworth. Throughout the day I met individually with my students and, I must say, this is what really got me excited. I loved talking with each other them about what they are learning and what they would like to accomplish by Friday. This kind of time with my students is absolutely wonderful.

Arrowmont Part 1

I'm at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts this week to teach my class "It's the Little Things." This is my first time here and I am excited to get to know the school. I drove from Penland yesterday morning and what a lovely drive it was! It's basically all mountains the entire time and, lucky for me, nothing but blue skies. I was jostled out of dream-time, though, when I entered Gatlinburg, the complete opposite of the landscape proceeding it. The main street is packed with wax museums, souvenir shops, flashing lights, and fried food. It's a spectacular spectacle! Then Arrowmont is this sweet little place tucked away just off that crazy road and it feels incredibly secluded for being so close to all that kitsch.

After I got settled into my room yesterday afternoon I settled into the fantastic metals studio with the help of artist-in-residence, Lisa Johnson. Next I was toured around the facilities by Bill Griffith, the program director, followed by an instructor meeting. There are only four instructors this session and about 20 students. The feel in general is very personal.

I have five students in my class all with varied backgrounds and metals experience. We met for about two hours last night--I gave them a safety tour and talked about the class, we introduced ourselves and chatted. They seem like a great bunch already and I am looking forward to spending my week with them.

I ended my night by driving around town as I listened to Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn.

The Cover

My work made the cover of the Metalsmith Magazine's Exhibition in Print! I'm feeling many things at this moment and, honestly, I don't know where to begin...I will say the cover is beautiful with its white background and yellow accents. It feels like me. Time Away

I don't know if you noticed but I was gone for a bit recently from blogging, Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr. I was so busy I could barely find time to answer my emails, let alone write a blog post, upload images, etc. I have an incredible amount of work on my plate from now until November and it is a challenge to balance my time. So after some thought, I've decided to step away from online activity, again, like I did in May of 2009. I will be away for the rest of July and will start up again in early August. I just need time to be devoted to my bench. I hope you don't mind and I also hope you will come back later for more.

New Rings

Unexpected Inspiration

My friend Betsy DeWitt brought this back for me from Florida. It reminded her of me and is now my favorite thing. She knew it was for crabbing, but wasn't exactly sure of the how. After a Google search, I learned it's a "crab hand line with weighted bait clip" and seems to work like a fishing pole, without the pole. You add bait (chicken necks works best!), cast it into the water, and wait. Then you reel it in and use a net to bring the crab out of the water. As for me and my vegetarian lifestyle I will only be using it for inspiration. I love its simplicity - it's just a triangular safety pin! Add some string and other objects and you have one fantastic piece of minimalist jewelry. I have posted a picture of one I found online below and some lovely safety pins also for fishing.

Guest Star #85...Pilar Cotter

The other day I visited Velvet da Vinci's Facebook page and checked out ¡Genial! New Jewelry from Spain!, an exhibition that recently opened at Velvet's brick and mortar location in San Francisco. I enjoyed the collection of images and I especially liked the work of today's Guest Star, Pilar Cotter. At first glance, the material seems to be cotton rope, but upon closer examination you will discover it is actually porcelain. I love the simplicity of these pieces and their clever pin mechanisms. Each object has personality and appears wonderfully tactile.

Bowl, 24K forged gold

On Tuesday I piled into a van with Sun Kyoung Kim and her session 2 Penland metals class and drove to the Mint Museum to see "Attitude and Alchemy: The Metalwork of Gary Noffke." The show includes an incredible array of objects and jewelry (124 pieces) that span Noffke's career. It was truly fantastic to see the work in person! His technical mastery of metal is astonishing and I especially appreciate his surface treatments and attention to detail, details that are evidence of the his process and also appear effortless. I jotted down a few notes in my sketchbook about his details that I will pass along to my students anytime I teach: Noffke's hammer marks are expressive; he believed details add another layer of "information and depth." I was also delighted to see a selection of tools and personal objects from his studio accompanied by several large-scale photographs of his workspace. It made the retrospective feel complete.

Afterward we drove to the Mint Museum Randolph to see "Chanel: Designs for the Modern Woman" and the Historic Costume Collection. Both collections are exquisite, but I especially enjoyed seeing the costumes. In the last year or so my interest in historic costume has grown so it was exciting to see so many examples of antique clothing and accessories. Among the many gowns were several cases of jewelry, gloves, hats, and shoes including some fine examples of mourning jewelry. The necklace pictured here is a style I have not seen before in which the the hair has been woven and cinched to resemble beads. I was also excited to see several Wedgewood pieces including a chatelaine.

The day was very, very inspiring. I knew the Noffke show would be great, but I did not anticipate just how much I would enjoy it. The clothing exhibitions were an unexpected bonus and, together, all three exhibits left me in awe. Finally, I loved spending time with Sun and her class and I am grateful that they invited me to join them.

Guest Star #84...Heejin Hwang

Today's Guest Star is Heejin Hwang, a current graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I had the pleasure of meeting Heejin last summer in Helen Carnac's enameling class and was quickly impressed by the work she made. Her most recent series, "Connection," includes sculptural necklaces made with enameled steel wire forms. She uses repetition of a single form to create scale and to draw the eye from one point to another. In addition to the volume of the individual works, these pieces have a visual weight that lends itself perfectly to the concept behind her work.

Here are more samples from the time I spent enameling last week. I was excited to try the liquid yellow and planned to layer white on top of it, but once I was finished stoning it I knew it was great on its own. The faint dots appeared when the color dried and I crossed my fingers that they would still be visible after firing. Happily, they were. Elizabeth thinks they occur due to the very beginnings of rust on the steel plate.

Guest Star #83...Christina Pauls

Today's Guest Star is Christina Pauls. After spending a lot of time embroidering, Christina began to focus on the pattern of the holes where the stitches go instead of the stitches themselves. Now she thoughtfully combines textiles techniques with metalwork. The holes suggest an original embroidery pattern while also hinting at the shape of a faceted gemstone. I love this vestigial nod to the embroidery, the redefining of the holes, and the use of negative space as the focus. She also has a fascinating series of brooches that are embroidered directly on clothing using hair.

Christina also has an intersting blog in which she has featured textiles in many forms and other incredible design that focuses on line.

An Enameled Book

I spent some time in the metals studio this week with Elizabeth Turrell and Eileen Wallace who have been teaching the class "Enameling for Books and More." I've been interested in book making for a long time and finally had a chance to learn how to build a simple book, made even more exciting for me because I got to make a metal book. I began by chopping up some steel into 2" x 2" pieces and brushed each with liquid enamels (just like I did a year ago in Helen Carnac's class). I used a scribe to draw on each, creating a sketch that linked from page to page. I had some problems with a few of the panels during firing and thought they were unusable until Elizabeth suggested I sandblast them. So I played around with sandblasting, removing material in specific places. Then I added more enamel, re-fired, and tried to reveal a little of the layers underneath as I smoothed the surfaces with an abrasive pad. What resulted is a wintry landscape that felt more like my work than my original plan for a simple linked drawing. Once each panel was complete I made an accordion style book with book cloth and Gudy V, a very sticky and strong sheet adhesive.

I loved enameling again after a year and it was fantastic to learn something new outside of my medium! It was also such a treat to be in the studio again with Elizabeth and to spend time with Eileen.

Something for David

My friend David Chatt completed his Penland residency recently and we exchanged gifts just before he left. I made him this brooch and he made me the beaded necklace pictured below. He also surprised me with a beaded wishbone which I found on my bench after he drove off.

I started making beaded jewelry when I was in highschool. Later, after graduating from SUNY Fredonia, I moved to Woodstock, NY and worked at a bead store (the incredible Beyond Beadery now in Colorado). I discovered David's work then and have been inspired ever since.

Arrowmont Class Reminder

As you may already know, I will be teaching "It's the Little Things" at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts at the end of the summer. The class will begin with a slide presentation of images of all different kinds of jewelry with great details, both subtle and extravagant. Then during the week we will cover roller printing, texturing with files, hammers, and chasing tools, riveting, tab setting, findings, patination, and keum boo. These longer demos will be complemented by quick ones as time allows and lots of talk about why details are so important. I will encourage students to make lots of samples as they try every technique. I also have project ideas that can be tailored for different skill levels once students are ready to make finished jewelry. We will begin each day by sharing the things we've made. This is a great class for beginning students and for more advanced ones as well. For those beginning students I will demonstrate sawing, filing, and piercing.

"new" Necklace (see the original here)

Another "new" necklace...It was originally white and yellow, but I decided to repaint it when it came back from one of my galleries. I added navy, hot pink, light blue, and yellow and then absolutely hated it. I tried to learn to like it, but it just didn't look good to me. It reminded me of bad 80's fashion and it did not feel at all like my work. (When one of my friends saw it, he said something like "I think I had a pair of 'Jams' like that when I was 10." Dreadful.) To remedy this, I added another color, light blue, and used only my wax file to scratch away little bits here and there. I like the finished piece very much now. (Available at The Signature Shop in Atlanta, GA.)

Auction 2011

For this year's Penland Benefit Auction I made a bow cluster brooch. I was thinking about several things when I made it--my grandmother and the enameled locket she gave me, playing with the tassels that held back the curtains in the living room when I was a kid, and a Cartier shoulder brooch I saw during a trip to San Francisco. I layered more colors on this piece - light blue, yellow, white, hot pink and red - and included two tassels. In addition, the chain can be taken off and worn separately as a necklace.

New Work, Sort Of

For Green Hill Center

With the price of silver increasing almost daily, metalsmiths are challenged to find new and creative ways to keep making work without spending a lot. My solution in addition to milling my own metal was to recall my work from many of my galleries. Once I had it back I cleaned it all up and reinvented many pieces--I took some apart and added spray paint to others. Then I created complementary groups by combing my different series of Regal Graffiti, Borderlines, and Line Drawings. Finally I filled in the gaps with newly made Small Earrings and Bow Earrings made from milled sheet metal. In the end I didn't spend any additional money and shipped fresh groups back to each gallery. In addition to Green Hill Center, Galerie Noel Guyomarc'h, and Heidi Lowe, Penland Gallery, Gallery Lulo, Crimson Laurel Gallery, and Quirk Gallery also received "new" work.

Tiny Gallery Again!

Guest Star #80...Stacey Lane

I have known Stacey Lane since 1999 when I met her here at Penland and I have admired her work ever since. Last weekend I attended an exhibition opening for Stacey and her husband, clay artist, Michael Kline, at the wonderful local gallery Crimson Laurel. I loved seeing so much Stacey Lane jewelry at one time! Stacey works with wax to sculpt and cast tiny pieces in the form of animals and various decorative motifs. The delicate and often humorous work reminds me of medieval/antique jewelry, yet also has a modern feel. Stacey also uses lots of gorgeous gemstones and the occasional shrinky-dink (see the Queen Anne's Lace Brooch below).

Final Day, Final Glimpse

Today marks the last day for my USA project and the final glimpse of the first piece for my show. These images show the nearly completed piece--I still have some surface work in the form of scratched details to add and I may paint a few more cubes for better visual balance. At this time I am taking a short break to work on other pieces.

I have also included a picture of the necklace it was inspired by, my favorite piece in the jewelry box I played with as a child. I carried it with me allover my grandparent's house and loved hanging it over my forehead like a tiara Cleopatra would have worn. I also have a memory of holding it during dinner and accidentally dipping it in the gravy on my pile of mashed potatoes. I don't think any adults saw this happen and I did not draw attention to myself, maybe for fear that the necklace would be taken away from me. I wiped the rhinestones with my napkin but was not able to clean it completely. There is a yellowed area that marks this moment.

Today's Guest Star is British designer, Eleanor Bolton. The work that caught my attention is her minimal and abstract Rope Collection, pieces made using cotton rope that is dyed, coiled, and knotted. I enjoy her precise, elegant use of this typically utilitarian material and the large scale that most of the finished pieces occupy. Eleanor also makes some intriguing objects like her Collection Boxes that house a variety of objects and 2-dimensional works.

Final Days

There are only a few days left before my USA project deadline (May 9) is here! As many of you know I already met my goal and now I'm trying to raise additional funding to offset the cost of professional photography. I have made $292 above my goal of $6000! Really exciting! As I've said before, if you were thinking of donating earlier and didn't, you still can and I would LOVE it! There are still some great donor perks left, too...

Some Thoughts

The seven weeks of fundraising for my USA project have been incredible for a number of reasons. Months ago when I was first approached to submit a project I wasn't interested--the idea of asking people for help made me feel uncomfortable and seemed like something I definitely did not want to do. Then I took some time to think about it and I realized I had to follow-through. It was a challenge I couldn't ignore. At this point I also had the concept for the solo show which gave me confidence and enthusiasm.

The days leading up to the launch were nerve-wracking for me, the fear of (public) failure hanging over my head. Those were some anxiety-ridden days. But, once it was live I felt a huge sense of relief. Then the incredible initial response from all of you was just what I needed to move forward and remain positive. I felt like I was part of a team, something bigger than me, and being supported by so many different people was thrilling! I also had a plan for the coming weeks and felt prepared, despite also feeling blind.

Over the next two weeks I followed my daily schedule which helped me to stay focused and helped me to manage the stresses of unknown territory. Each day I would review the plan and modify as needed. I ended up turning this plan into a daily journal with detailed entries.

It was also difficult and pretty much impossible for me to do anything else. It was a struggle to be at the bench and I discovered all I was capable of doing when I wasn't working on the project was to putter around organizing things.

I look back now at all of this with complete fascination and excitement! I have learned tons about fundraising, marketing, and building community, while experiencing an array of emotions. I had expectations, of course, and yet I had no idea what to expect.

Week 7 and a Sixth Glimpse

Week 7 and a sixth glimpse AND my final week of fundraising! How time flies! (My deadline is NEXT Monday, May 9!) These new images show the masked necklace with spray paint layered in white and light blue. I chose light blue because the original necklace was made of light blue rhinestones. I know it's hard to tell from the images but only certain cubes are painted. Next week I will post images of the completed piece and I will also reveal the original necklace. Stay tuned...!

In addition to this new glimpse I also want to comment on how fascinating this experience has been for me. I have never done anything like this before and I have learned so much! I plan to write more about this this week. I hope those of you who haven't contributed might feel compelled to donate, too. Additional funding above my $6,000 goal will be used toward professional photography, a necessary and costly component of making new work. I've been working with my wonderful photographer, Hank Drew, since 2004. This October I will work with him once again as he shoots the completed body of work and I hope to fly to Seattle to be in the studio when he takes the pictures. Needless to say, this will be an expensive endeavor so any funds beyond the $6,000 will be incredibly helpful. (So far we have raised $217!) Every little bit helps so if you've been following my project please consider making a contribution this week and help us to end with a bang! Thank you!

Week 6 and a Fifth Glimpse

Welcome to week 6 and your fifth glimpse, the masking process. Originally I planned to spray paint the entire necklace with light blue paint, but after seeing how the piece reflects light I knew I couldn't cover-up all that shine. Instead I decided to play on the light effects and only paint a few pieces. Masking was made very tricky then and I began by very carefully masking each cube. This got old fast and I ended up just piling on the tape. (Please visit my Flickr set to see details of all that tape!) When I was done I placed the piece on cardboard and taped down a few exposed spots. Now it's ready to paint!

Week 5 and a Fourth Glimpse

It's now week 5 and time for a fourth glimpse of my first solo show piece! These images show the completed necklace after I connected all the cubes with "staples" followed by tumble-polishing overnight. Once I had the necklace arranged on the dress form, I discovered all those sparkling light effects which I was not expecting. Next week I will talk about how they made me change my plan.

Once again I would like to say thank you for making the success of my project a reality for me! I raised a little bit more over the weekend! I'm lucky enough to still have several weeks to accumulate funding and would absolutely love to raise some "extra" funds for professional photographs, a costly but necessary undertaking. Week 4 and a Third Glimpse

This week's glimpse shows the first stage of the construction of the necklace. Once I had figured out how many cubes I needed to make the necklace, I made wire "staples" that act as the connectors between each cube element--one end of each staple was melted into a small ball. I pierced two holes in each cube and sanded away the burs left behind after drilling. I then began to connect the cubes one by one by threading a staple through two cubes and melting its other end into a ball. (This ball is larger than the hole and is what keeps the connection together.) I hope this makes sense! It's a challenge for me to describe in words!

This process was tedious! I had to grab the end of the staple to be melted with my third arm, making it stick up just enough that I could melt the wire and not cause any damage to the cubes. I also had to quench the necklace after melting each ball so I would not burn my fingers as I set-up for the next round--after patting the necklace dry, I set-up the system again. The completed necklace pictured at the top is composed of 40 cubes and took about 9 hours to connect.

Guest Star Friday #77...Reka Fekete

Hungarian-born, Amsterdam-based Reka Fekete makes jewelry and objects using discarded zinc etching plates. Reka uses this material because of its history--the plates contain the marks of other artists and these drawings and sketches connect their work with her work. The plates are further layered, stacked, and assembled together with tiny stitches in yarn or steel wire. Other subtle details include an occasional bit of color that remains from previous printing. Each piece has a monumental presence despite is small scale.

Week 3 Updates! and We Did It, Part 2

I am still reeling from the fact that my USA project is now funded! When people ask me about it I often stumble over my words and say things like "I can't believe it" or "It's so cool," both of which are completely true but do not come anywhere close to expressing my feelings. I am honored by the way this project has gone, its success and speed, and, most importantly, how generous everyone has been. I really do feel like a part of team. We did this thing together and that is truly remarkable. We did it! I am so grateful and I will never forget this experience!

My project will remain live and can continue to accumulate funds until my deadline of May 9 even though it has reached "funded" status--having nearly 30 days left is such a great thing! If you are still interested in contributing, it is not too late. I will use any additional funds to help pay for photographing the final body of work. As I stated in my video, I anticipate making at least 30 pieces which will be photographed individually and in arrangements. I estimate that photography will cost $1000. Professional photographs are important for many reasons, documentation and promotion of course, but also they will allow me to show the work in its best light and to share it with all of you. Sharing this process and the completed works with you is incredibly important to me!

We Did It!

Yesterday just before lunch I received the donation that brought me to my goal. It was such an amazing moment. I stood there dumbfounded and then let out a huge scream. Thank you for making me feel this way. Thank you for every donation, every encouraging email, every Facebook comment, every Twitter retweet, and all the high fives around the Penland campus. I feel like I am part of an incredible team and I am so honored that you have all helped me to fund my USA project. I never imagined that funding would happen so quickly. I honestly did not know what to expect and have been on pins and needles for several weeks. Now 60 donors, $6092, and 17 days later I am in absolute awe. What a fascinating and humbling process this has been! My sincerest gratitude and heart-felt thanks to you all.

Week 3 and a Second Glimpse

Last week I began to reveal images of the first piece for my solo show. After creating a scale paper model I began working with a 12" x 6" sheet of 26 gauge sterling silver. I cut the sheet into strips and then began scoring them by filing a groove into the metal. Once I had three grooves I used my saw to make smaller pieces and folded these at the grooves using pliers. I also did a lot of filing and sanding to create subtly rounded corners and soft edges. I made about 76 total pieces, soldering each bent groove for stability. It has been an exciting two weeks! I am now 94% funded and less than $400 away from reaching my goal. This is all so unexpected. I did not even imagine that the response from all of you would be so incredible. I have received donations from family and friends, colleagues, artists working in a variety of media, gallery owners, clients, collectors, former students, and my Penland friends. Thank you! Each donation means so much to me!
